mill canyon ~ nevada ghost town

NAME: Mill Canyon
COUNTY: Eureka
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.

COMMENTS: Interesting country.
REMAINS: Stone Ruins.

The mining district was organized in 1863 as a result of mining activity in nearby Cortez.

A mill was built in 1864.  Delivery of the ore to the mill was extremely difficult as it had to be transported over the mountains by mule or by large ore wagons.

Overall, the mines were not successful and after 1873 most were abandoned.  The district remained quiet until 1909 when a few of the mines were reopened.  But the effort was unsuccessful and was soon abandoned.

In 1928, another company ventured into the area with marginal success and the area was abandoned for good in 1938.  Stone ruins are scattered along the canyon and the road to the site is quite dangerous.
